How much time to spend on marketing
Hi, this is Geoffrey Gorman, I teach artists how to get more exposure for their art. I wanted to address the question that I get often from artists: How much time do I need to spend on my marketing?
Those of us that have been in the art world for a long time know that there are not any formulas or precise answers to this question. To get a more accurate answer, I think you have to ask yourself some questions that have to be answered as realistically as possible. How much time do you want to spend creating portraits? How much money do you want/have to make? What sort of recognition do you want?
There is also a learning curve that each artist has to go through when they start taking their careers more seriously. The first couple of years you have to organize your entire office, studio, portfolio, and marketing material. (I have worked with some artists who spend 50-60 percent of their time just on their marketing. Some of this is basic foundation work like setting up your computer and programs, and it just can't be avoided.)
Does anyone else have thoughts about the ammount of time that should be spent on their marketing?
