bewildered making painted figures looking ghost like or like spirits

I painted a small figure on either side of a large human figure with the idea of having the smaller figures appear spirit or ghost like representing his conscience - one saying no, and the other saying yes to the larger figure about to pick up a sword. The larger figure scene is from a Firebird ballet. The problem now is how to make the smaller figures seem to be translucent with the background coming through. Unfortunately, they have already been painted solidly in before the background would be added there. Would a mixture of zinc white and background colors with a good amount of medium help with this?
