I was pretty bitterly disappointed when this portrait of my mum was rejected by the Royal Scottish Academy for their annual show.

However, I thought I would try my luck and see if the Royal Society of Portrait Painters would take it for their annual Open instead. Selection results were posted at noon today (gmt) and it's been accepted! I feel completely over the moon about this. Since I took up painting again in late 2011, about ten years after stupidly and self destructively giving it up, there have been times when I have felt deeply depressed about my abilities, my progress, my prospects of ever making a life as a painter. I know that this is just a small step and that I shouldn't read too much into it, but it is at least some sort of progress, some sort of vindication or confirmation that I was right to return to my first love in life. I might go and have a wee cry now.
