What kind of Ground is best for oil painting?

I recently read in the latest issue (4th Qrt 2012) of the Journal of the Portrait Society of America about the best ground for oil painting. When it comes to stretched linen I believe I understand the article reading that an acrylic ground (gesso) is not recommended as it lacks flexibility.
I was taught and retaught how to gesso or re-gesso a (stretched) gessoed canvas using typical gesso. Am I to be concerned about the longevity of my portraits on gessoed stretched canvas?
I am interested in hearing from others on thus topic.

Hello John,
I too have used acrylic Gesso for my oil paintings. I first use Gamblin PVA size and then I would use Acrylic gesso for my ground. I changed to now using Gamblin Oil Painting Ground. I like it. It does take more time to dry between coats. 24 hours. Its recommended 2 coats. 5-7 days before painting. You can use more for a smoother surface. It is stiffer than acrylic gesso. I hope I helped.
