HUD Portraits

I read and heard a report on Daniel Mark Duffy yesterday, an artist who is represented on the SOG site, in/on The Washington Post and "All Things Considered" (http://blog.washingtonpost.com/sleut...09/post_6.html, http://www.npr.org/templates/story/s...oryId=14509721)
Thought you might be interested. What demands. Unfortunately, they put their report on his work in the context of Hurricane Katrina and the Bush administration. I think he handled himself very well.

Interesting, Steve! I'm so glad you brought this to our attention.

Although I agree that the artist is handling himself very well, I can't help but wish every artist they approached said no to the timetable, photos, and the "work for hire" way they are treating him. Then big organizations, especially the government, would be forced to treat artists with respect for their process and product.

The trouble is, it is so hard to say no to the money. Theother side of the coin is that it is a job, and we need to work to live.

I wish a third party could have told Alphonso Jackson that not only is he approaching the artist in the wrong way and demanding something unreasonable, but also that he will get an inferior product by asking him to copy their photos and not be allowed to think through the composition and come up with his own ideas.
