Michael and Josef,

I believe what you're painting dictates the type of underpainting that you use. The absorbent canvas, low oil absorption pigments, maybe the technique used when anticipating glazing.

Michael, it is good you mentioned William's ability to draw. I believe that is what gives his technique in painting its strength. Not to mention the white apparel. (Chuckle.)

I can see the sense of Black Oil, lead having a positive and beneficial action on drying oils, but not the other driers, with the exception of copper, zirconium and rare earths.
