The purpose of these strips is to be able to isolate different values for the purpose of comparison. Their black material blocks out all surrounding areas so one can, by aligning the holes, compare different values. For example, the shadow side of the model can be compared to the light side of the background to see which, if either, is lighter or darker.
I have students use this when assessing the live model before them. Since the values placed on the painting are premixed on the palette my students should be aware of what the values are.
One of the main goals of my teaching is to get the brain out of its subjective assumptions and into a place where observation can take place objectively. This little device does a great job to that end.
