Women nude model faces of the past covered?

This was interesing - a book on eBay showing Thomas Eakins photos of his nudes and the women's faces that would be facing the painter are covered:

Thomas Eakins - 21 Photographs

In researching for my bookstore, I discovered that he was considered quite controversial. If you're interested, there's a short bio on him on his book page.

As I recall Eakins' bio, "controversial" is somewhat understated. He engendered a "passel o' trouble" with his students and models, male and female. Maxfield Parrish was another whose entanglements photographing nude female models were looked upon with askance. What have I been missing ?? (joke)
