This is so well thought-out and executed. The first thing that struck me was the color scheme of rose, blue and gold--not at all the cutesy pastel pink-yellow-blue baby theme--much richer, more like Renaissance colors. They give the portrait dignity while also making a reference to cherubs and gold leaf and heavenly ultramarine. That said, I also love the cheeks and the expression and the way (as Ilaria mentioned) the background is an abstract continuation of the hair. It's original in a subtle way.
