The study of the skeleton (and then the muscles that animate the skeleton) is so fundamental to what we do.
I recently bought a very flexible skeleton and to check it's true value, Mims (I only use the last name of the maestro for the ignorance of search engines) invited me to his studio, and set it up in the position of the current figure study he's working on.
I cannot describe the clarity of that moment... in fact, the real enlightenment was when my preconception that I'd get more out of building the ecorche (on top of a skeleton built in plastalina) was shattered by the reality of this particular light illuminating this particular skeleton - right next to his drawing of the model.
What I mean is - all of the key landmarks were clearly bone. Modelling the form is where a thorough grasp of the musculature anatomy is invaluable.
