Lisa, Thanks! Finding an expression that is natural is something I really work hard at. One of the little tricks that works really well for me sometimes at the beginning of a shoot is asking them to set in front of the camera while I 'adjust the settings'

Of course, there's always talking with them to distract them, and something else that helps to get a variety of 'looks' to choose from is playing mirror with them, I'll ask them to move their head like I move mine, then turn/tilt my head at different angles. Most kids find this amusing and they're concentrating on what I'm doing, not getting their picture taken, so the expressions are more natural. (not sure if this'd work with adults!
