Holly, his face is just wonderful; great depth, skin tones, and detail. Against that face the hair seems too loose. If it were my painting I'd render it a little more realistically and then fade off the tighter rendering as I moved away from the hair and face and see whether that worked. You might want a little more realism in his shirt, too, then.
