I have set up my easel on the opposite side of the room that faces a huge mirror. When I paint I periodically pick up a hand held mirror and look at the reflection of the painting in the huge mirror. Somehow this allows me to get a better sense of how dark or light something needs to be. If the painting works from across the room, then the values must be correct. I hope this helps you too.
