Allan,

Degas is one of my inspirations. You have done a wonderful job of capturing not only the color but the feel of the painting. Your brush work is quite lovely.

This is very nicely done, Allan! I especially like how you've caught the plane change in the temple.

Kimberly Dow 01-05-2005 03:45 PM

Very nice!

Allan Rahbek 01-05-2005 08:00 PM

Thank you Sharon, Linda and Kim,

I have always admired Degas for his elegant sensitive brushwork.
There is so much to painting in oils, so many different ways to use the paint.

Allan, I recently saw two exhibition of Degas work, in Rome and in London. I was again enchanted by his loose use of the paint and the armonies of the colours.
You really managed to replicate his atmosphere.
Did you learn a lot in doing it?

Allan Rahbek 01-07-2005 01:58 PM

Thanks Ilaria

When I copied his painting I tried as much to copy his technique as the likeness.

I found that the paint was mostly applied thinly in this portrait, but he had played with the shape of the individual strokes, almost like he did his drawings in charcoal and maybe more visual in his pastels. The stroke itself is a motive. Stroke of Genius, if you like.

To Carry out this copy I painted in many ways, using brush, palette knife and my fingers, so it was a really fine experience and, yes I believe that I learned something.

You know perhaps that his grandmother was Italian, this would explain his sense of beauty. ;)

I know, and there are all the paintings of his cousins which are notable too!
Many many compliments again, when I saw the two exhibition I told you about I did take notes but copying just seemed me to hard a task!

Ilaria,
to be honest I am not completely sure that this represent his sister. But they look so alike that they must be very close anyway. And her name is Rose Adelaide de Gas, so....

Well if she is she is much nicer. He was quite ugly, wasn't he?
Still a genius though!
Bye bye, I am offline until my computer monitor gets repaired next week, hope to find a lot of new interesting posts

You did an outstanding job on this Allan! Indeed the likeness and the mood of the painting is there for 100 %. I should love to see an original work of yours in this style.
Regards
Jan

I can only echo what Jan said. This is very impressive, especially as it is quite a difficult task to "copy" freshness. And you have. Bravo!

Beautiful !

One of these days I'll have to get around to trying some old master copies. If I do as nice a job as you have, I'll be pleased.

I do notice a couple of places where the shapes are off, though. In yours, the chin is too prominent and the shapes at the end of the nose and around the left nostril are just a bit too large and over modeled. Otherwise very nice!
